Investing in Our Children’s Jewish Future

On the holiest night of the year, as we stand before Hashem and reflect on who we are and what truly matters to us, there is perhaps no more important question than this:

What kind of Jewish future do we want to create for our children and grandchildren?

We should not shy away from the reality that Jewish life today faces real challenges. Assimilation is not some distant possibility. It is happening around us, and our children are growing up in a world in which there are more choices, more distractions and more competing identities than ever before.

It is easy, therefore, to look at the future of Jewish life through a lens of anxiety — to focus on what might be lost, what might disappear, and what we need to do to prevent it.

But perhaps, especially on this night, we should choose a different approach.

Rather than simply asking how we stop our children from walking away from Judaism, let us ask what we can do to make them want to walk towards it.

Let us build a community where being Jewish feels positive, meaningful and joyful. A community where our children feel that Judaism belongs to them. Where they can learn, question, celebrate and discover. Where Jewish life is not simply a list of obligations, but a source of friendship, belonging, purpose and pride.

A place where coming to shul feels welcoming.
Where learning is inspiring.
Where Jewish experiences create lasting memories.
Where our traditions connect us to generations past while giving us something exciting to carry into the future.

A place where being Jewish feels like a warm hug, not a tiresome obligation.

That kind of Jewish future will not happen by itself. It needs investment — in people, in education, in experiences and, above all, in our children.

That is why this year's Kol Nidrei Appeal is focused on investing in the Jewish education and engagement of our young people.

Last year, our appeal focused on adult education. We asked the community to support an ambitious expansion of learning, and you responded with extraordinary generosity. Because of your support, we have been able to significantly increase our adult education provision, including the appointment of Rabbi Benjy Rickman. Many of you have already experienced and enjoyed the initiatives he has introduced.

We are incredibly grateful for that support.

But Jewish education cannot stop with us.

If we want Whitefield to remain a vibrant, confident and connected Jewish community for generations to come, we need to give our children the same opportunities to discover the richness and beauty of Jewish life.

We want them to have Jewish knowledge, but also Jewish confidence. To understand our traditions, but also to feel connected to them. To develop friendships and memories within our community. To experience Judaism not as something they are told they ought to do, but as something that brings meaning and happiness to their lives.

We want them to love being Jewish.

And that takes investment.

High-quality, inspiring Jewish education requires committed educators, excellent programmes and proper resources. This is an investment not just in a programme or a year's activities, but in the character and future of our community.

If you have children or grandchildren, this appeal is an opportunity to invest directly in their Jewish future.

If you don't, it is an opportunity to invest in the children of our friends and neighbours — because their Jewish future is part of our shared future.

And for all of us, it is an opportunity to say that we believe Jewish life has a future here, and that we are prepared to build it.

Tonight, we can focus on the threats facing Jewish life. Or we can respond to those threats by creating something so positive, so welcoming and so meaningful that the next generation will want to be part of it.

Let us build a Whitefield where Jewish life is something to embrace.
A community our children are proud to belong to.
A Judaism they are excited to explore.
And a future they will want to pass on.

Please give as generously as you can to this year's Kol Nidrei Appeal.

Together, let's invest in a Jewish future that our children and grandchildren won't simply inherit — but will love.

Mychiel on education

Why Education Matters Now More Than Ever

Education is the lifeblood of the Jewish people. With rising antisemitism, our most powerful response isn't just defiance—it's unshakable pride in our identity.

This pride comes from:

  • Knowledge that empowers
  • Community that nurtures
  • Education that helps our children, youth, and adults stand tall and strong

What Your Support Will Create

The Vision: Outstanding Jewish education for every generation

From toddlers to grandparents, we'll provide:

  • Early childhood Jewish learning
  • Teen programs building strong Jewish identities
  • Adult education deepening knowledge of our history, traditions, and Israel connection

The Reality: We have amazing programs but critical gaps remain

What We Need:

  • An additional educator (ideally female) to coordinate and expand programs
  • More social outings with educational elements
  • Guest speakers and learning exchanges
  • Enhanced group and home learning opportunities
  • Partnership support from organizations like the Jewish Learning Exchange

Your Moment to Make History

By supporting this year's Kol Nidrei Appeal, you are:

  • ✅ Securing our congregation's future
  • ✅ Investing in Jewish resilience and strength
  • ✅ Fulfilling the mitzvah of tzedakah at the most sacred moment

Stand Together. Give Together. Grow Together.

On the holiest night of the year, let's unite in generosity.

Give with an open heart so Whitefield can continue to inspire, educate, and uplift every precious member of our community.

With warmest wishes for a year of blessing, health, and learning
